The first Sperling Fire Department & Sperling Community Club fundraising dart tournament went so well that organizers are already considering having another tourney.
“We generated approximately $6,000 overall,” said one of the tournament organizers Gary Kelly. “It was just excellent.”
Funding raised from the tournament was to be split evenly between the fire department and the community with the exception of about $320 that was allocated to the community’s playground upgrade project.
Kelly said they attracted 40 dart players to the April 27 event. They also received solid support from area business sponsors.
“About 90 per cent never even played darts before. But they came out to show their support and have fun,” he said.
Kelly added that organizers were impressed by the success of the tournament and plan on making it either an annual or perhaps even a semi-annual fundraiser.
“This was new and we’re looking at maybe another one in the fall or next year,” Kelly said. “It looks like it’s going to be an annual thing for us.”
