Dundas Central Playground Transformed Through Community Investment

Dundas Central Public School is having its playground redesigned into a state of the art natural playground for September 2012, through the work of Adam Bienenstock and his company Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds.

The playground is being rebuilt through funding from the community and at no cost to Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB).

“Dundas Central is a 150 year old school that is rich in history and education, and serves as the heart of the Dundas community,” said Trustee Jessica Brennan.

“To have the school's parents, staff and neighbours pull together to create this new and exciting outdoor space for their children shows how great of a place Dundas is. This is a perfect example of community engagement and environmental restoration to create a healthy school and a healthy society.”

The new playground design addresses drainage issues on the property and adds an interpretive wetland, and improved long jump, amphitheatre, sustainable tree and shrub clusters, a useable field, pathways, outdoor musical instruments, improved fences and site access, boulder climbers, natural seating, outdoor classrooms, and two spectacular natural playgrounds for both the junior and senior kindergarten students.

“As a former student at Dundas Central and currently as a parent of kids at the school, I fully understand the deficiencies of the current playground and the need for the playground to be redesigned so it’s functional for students and staff all year round,” said Adam Bienenstock. “I am very pleased to partner with Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, to create a healthy, educational, environmental and multi-age community resource.”

Community support is a major factor to the long-term success of the project. If you are interested in contributing to the redevelopment of the Dundas Central playground, please contact Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds at [email protected]
