We anticipate July wll be bringing the heat. PGP would like to raise awareness of what this month is about to us all! It happens to be Park and Recreation month and UV Awareness Month.

Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. This July, we want everyone talking about what they love about parks and recreation and why parks and recreation are so vital in our lives!  This July, discover your super powers at your local parks and rec! When we work together to further health and wellness, conservation and social equity efforts, awesome things happen! We support the NRPA, they have put together some contests and resources to help get involved.  Visit them at..http://www.nrpa.org/july/.

While you are busy playing in the sun this July remember that it is also UV Safety Month.  Promoting July as the official UV Safety Month will help to remind us all of the dangers we face while exposing ourselves to the sun without protection. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S. and UV rays from the sun are the primary cause. It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that one American dies every hour from skin cancer and that this year alone, there will be an estimated 68,000 new cases of the most serious form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma.

The need to protect your skin from the sun has become very clear over the years, supported by several studies linking overexposure to the sun with skin cancer. The harmful ultraviolet rays from both the sun and indoor tanning “sunlamps” can cause many other complications besides skin cancer - such as eye problems, a weakened immune system, age spots, wrinkles, and leathery skin. Read all about the best ways to protect you and love ones by practicing UV safety.
