Before we go any further, let’s clarify what I am talking about. It’s not your school work I am offering to help with. I’m talking about designing and building a playground—taking your ideas from the drawing board and making a good solid plan for your build.

How can I possibly do this from where I sit? I’ll explain. If you’re considering a playground build, you have picked up the right magazine, and are definitely in the right place at the right time. I don’t say that just because there are so many great opportunities available with all of the latest and greatest in play equipment and resources in the industry. What I am saying is that we have brought them all together in one place for you to help you with your homework. You wouldn’t want to start a playground build without digging in and pulling every bit of information you could get your hands on … too much depends on it.

This issue is put together with that reason in mind… getting you to all the resources available in the playground industry. Not only do we have bios and listings of the major manufacturers of play equipment in the industry awaiting you in this special issue, you’re going to find aquatic and skatepark component solutions, safety and maintenance sources and other related products including listings of fundraising companies.

We have even gone a little further this time. We realize there are play-related issues out there. It stands to reason that if you have structures and people utilizing them, there are going to be some things that will need to be addressed not only for the safety of the user but for things that will crop up and even affect manufacturers, organizations involved with supervision and safety … the whole gamut. Let’s face it, if it affects one part of the industry, it’s likely to affect others.

We are offering a look into some of these issues with our features in this special issue. These are things that are to be considered from design to use of the playground, and it’s good for us all to be in touch with these issues. How else can you make an educated decision in planning your play space if you aren’t privy to the facts? There is a veritable buffet of food for thought packed in this special issue, so I hope you have come hungry to see what the industry has brought to the table.

Don’t be afraid to call manufacturers and other resources listed to find out what they can do for you and which components will fit best with your play area. They all have knowledgeable reps who are proud to be a part of this fine industry. Take advantage of their knowledge and expertise in planning and design as well.

Now that you have a good idea of what you’ll find here, it’s time to dig in and enjoy what could be the best homework assignment you have ever had … research on planning and design of your own playground. You now have the means.
