When the summer season is approaching, it may be difficult to plan activities and meals that will satisfy both children and adults. Here are some tips for maximizing your summer fun while staying both cost-effective and healthy.

Stay Cool and Hydrated

It is vital to keep your intake of water up during the hottest time of the year, as sweating more can lead to quicker dehydration. If you are having trouble getting your children to drink the proper amount of water, other liquids like low sugar juices and iced teas can provide much-needed hydration. Additionally, delicious fruits such as watermelon contain large amounts of water. Make sure to keep everyone cooled off when participating in outdoor activities, and know when it is time to rest and rehydrate to avoid the dangers of heat exhaustion.

Make Food with a Healthy Twist

Barbecue is a staple of any summer cuisine or menu. However, it can quickly turn into a meal laden with calories and fats. Some healthy bbq can present a variety of delectable options, such as substituting white bread buns for lettuce wraps for your burger or opting for lighter versions of the wines and beers that you enjoy, rather than calorie-heavy mixed drinks. When making marinades or barbecue sauces for your meats, try using lighter versions that will deliver the same amount of calories, but are overall much better for you. Fruit is always a good option for children as a sweet snack.

Put Your Kids to Work

If your children are interested in earning extra money during the summer but are not old enough to get a job, you can provide a list of chores for them to perform around the house. For instance, offer to pay them extra for taking care of pets, doing weeding or other yard work, or washing your car. This way, your children can keep themselves busy, and many of your chores can be completed while they are learning the benefits of earning money and financial responsibility. You can also utilize your children's free time during school breaks to teach them life skills, like how to do laundry on their own.

Scope Out Activities Around Town

Having your children at home for several weeks at a time, and trying to keep them entertained, can potentially be expensive. However, many cities offer free or low-cost activities that are fun for the whole family. Find out where there are movie screenings at your local park or movie theater geared towards children. If you have museums in your city or town, find out if there are days where residents can get in for free or at a reduced cost. Stores like Home Depot and the Lego Store have monthly or weekly activities that children can participate in for free, and build something that they can use as well.

Finding things to do in the summer months does not have to be difficult. With these solutions, you are guaranteed to have a wonderful summer season with your entire family.
