8 tips to help your child foster creative writing skills

8 tips to help your child foster creative writing skills

The most fertile imagination filled with countless possibilities that can be channeled through creative writing activities for kids. Creative writing also helps children express what they feel and helps them develop a flair for communication.

That’s why creative writing is important. It is often overlooked in favor of more lucrative subjects like Maths and physics. Still, learning creative writing is the key to knowing how to communicate effectively, which is an essential skill to have if you want your child to have a successful career.

Here are a few ways you can bring out your child’s flair for the written word:

  1. Encourage your child to read

If you want your child to have a flair for writing, the most important habit to cultivate is to make them read. Once a child picks up a book to read, it will help oil their imagination and help them understand how to express ideas coherently.

  1. Foster a good vocabulary

Your child also needs the tools to express themselves clearly, and here, the tools are words. Helping your child build an expansive vocabulary will enable your child to express themselves better.

  1. Encourage your child to keep a journal

One of the most important creative writing prompts for kids is journaling. Emphasize how important it is that your child starts keeping a daily journal, even if it is writing about mundane things like how their day at school went. This will help cultivate a habit of writing regularly and thus expressing themselves better.

  1. Provide writing supplies

If you lure your child with fancy pens, markers, and pretty diaries, it will feel like an inviting space, and it will make them want to use these materials. Even if your child might not be old enough to make complex sentences, it will be good practice for the future.

  1. Use creative writing prompts for kids

Creative writing prompts for kids like story starters can help your child get started in a particular direction. You can also use visuals as writing prompts. Keep a collection of magazines or store flyers that can help your child get imaginative on what they want to write about. Get creative, ask your child what the best ways to start their creative process are, and take time and brainstorm with them.

  1. Use dramatization as a prompt

Ask your child to make up a character, and add details of their life like name, age, tone of voice, and more dialogues to start writing a story. Children can also read aloud the parts that they’ve written for more fun.

  1. Ask your child to write about something they like

If your child loves football, ask them to write an essay or story about their favorite player or their favorite football team. This might help your child get more excited at the prospect of writing since they get to write about what they love.

  1. Organize outdoor activities

If your child is running low on ideas on what to write about, organize a day outdoors, like visiting the zoo or museum and asking them to write about their day. This can help your child get creative and spin a story about the events of their day out.

There are so many fun and exciting ways to foster the spirit of creative writing in your child. As a parent, you must encourage your child and support them even if they’re just beginning their creative writing journey.
