ASTM F1487 is the Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use — the foundational safety document governing public playground design, installation, and use zones in the United States. Developed by ASTM International's Committee F15 and regularly updated to reflect the latest research and industry practice, this standard covers equipment intended for children from age 2 through 12 in schools, parks, child care facilities, and any public or semi-public play environment. It establishes requirements for use zones, fall heights, equipment spacing, entrapment hazards, age-appropriate design, and much more. The most current release is ASTM F1487-25, published June 2025.
