It doesn’t get much more fun than this: building a playground from salvaged materials with a giant group of creative, excited kids. Nice! This was my third year joining the crew at the Hudson Valley Sudbury School and it just keeps getting better as we add more features to their funky playscape in the woods.
This year: obstacle course! Our materials: giant spools, climbing rope, dismantled wooden playground pieces, boards, logs, tires, wooden ladders, and pulleys.
Kids were hammering, climbing ladders, tying complex knot systems, and best of all – collectively, creatively deciding what we should build and how it should happen. It’s a very democratic place where every child’s voice is heard. Inspiring. My job was to listen to the ideas, look at our materials, and figure out the best way to make it all happen. What a blast! Improv playscaping in action with preschoolers through teenagers. Check it out!
