Recycling bins in a park

Everybody knows that recycling is crucial to protecting the health and future of the planet. What you might not know is what a significant role recycling in our parklands can have on the big picture.

Think about it. . . . All those bottles of water and electrolyte drinks consumed by runners, bikers, walkers, rollerbladers, and—well, pretty much everyone on those hot, sunny days.

Research shows that the majority of these people actually do want to recycle all that plastic and glass when they’re done, so what stands in their way?

There are two main obstacles to recycling: (1) a lack of convenient facilities in many parks, playgrounds, and athletic areas and (2) poorly identified containers.

In order to increase the amount of engagement in recycling, we need to add more locations where park goers can recycle. People have a split second to decide where to toss that bottle, so recycling bins need to be more clearly identified and distinctly differentiated from the garbage bins next to them.

With a little effort and a bit of teamwork, we can keep our parks and playgrounds green and clean, and ready for everybody to enjoy.
