How Playing Helps Childhood Development

Playtime is an essential factor in helping children grow and develop. Every interaction is an opportunity for your child to learn, and playing is no different. Whether they’re playing games with other children or playing alone, children benefit physically, emotionally, and academically from this. Parents can sometimes forget the importance of allowing kids to be kids, but it can positively impact them now and later in life.

Learn how playing helps childhood development.

Social Skills

Interacting with children on the playground can help kids learn social behaviors. Children can discover skills like teamwork and leadership in the classroom through group work, but the playground reinforces these with games. For example, kids learn how to adapt to situations. They can develop an ability to share or even creating boundaries when saying no to sharing.

Playing games like “school” or “work” helps kids learn negotiation and conflict resolution. Acquiring these skills independently and without the guidance of adults will strengthen their importance.

Activity

Active kids tend to become active adults. Encouraging kids to play will help them get moving and discourage sedentary behavior as they get older. It also improves coordination, builds muscles, and helps keep them at healthy weights while strengthening their cardiovascular system.

Playing games will also benefit their hand-eye coordination and dexterity when they’re toddlers.

Behavior

Playing reduces stress and will help children concentrate in the classroom. This can be especially important for students with learning disabilities. But overall, it positively impacts all students. Being solely focused on academics is stressful to all children, which sometimes happens to gifted students as well. Incorporating playtime throughout the day can help gifted students apply themselves and excel.

Creativity

Balancing playtime with schoolwork gives your child the opportunity to express themselves. Playing allows children to explore their creative side and imagination. Having opportunities throughout the day to do this will enable them to grow up to become critical thinkers. Furthermore, it’ll give them the ability to think of innovative solutions as an adult.

Knowing how playing helps childhood development will aid you in encouraging your child to get outside and play. Doing so will benefit them both now and as adults.
